You can’t stop the future, You can’t rewind the past, The only way to learn the secret… is to press play. – Jay Asher
Growing up, we all have this idea of how our life should look and how we can improve it. And that plan doesn’t always work out. We meet people that are not the best for us. We get put in situations that are not necessary for our growth. At some point, we realize we are so far from our initial goals, and we just have to stop for a second and regroup. I had this conversation with myself a few times, but thinking about it and acting on it, are two different things. These are really the things that I feel like I should personally eliminate, and maybe you should too! Life is definitely too short to live a crapy life!
Bettering your life is very particular to yourself. The way I see my life going could differ from yours, and that is totally okay! If you feel like only one of these points affects you, change that one thing. If it’s more, you can change more. Also, this doesn’t have to happen all at once. Change usually doesn’t come easily, and real progress will only be seen in the long run!
I hope you will enjoy this post! Let me know in the comments section is there something that resonated with you particularly!
Stop putting yourself second
Like everyone else, I have career goals and life goals. But trying to please everyone else, and putting everyone else’s needs above my own, are slowing me down so much! I find myself late to every deadline for many reasons. For example, helping someone else or because I haven’t seen this person in a long time. In the last year, I have been working on this so much. I can see my life changing already. Living your life for yourself instead of others is a huge step to regaining control of your life.
Of course, there are times you should definitely put yourself second, but it should never become a habit.
Stop speaking negatively to yourself
Even little phrases like “I’m such a loser” do not sit well with your subconscious. We are our greatest critics. We judge ourselves so harshly. No one notices all the little details you see in yourself, so loosen up a bit and start loving yourself! Give yourself daily compliments until you actually believe it!
Stop adding bad stress in your life
You need a balance in your life. We all go through stressful moments that can be out of our control; the goal is to never add to it! If you don’t know the difference between good stress and bad stress, read this article! Before taking a decision, or adding to your responsibilities, ask yourself if this will benefit you or harm you. At the end of the day, if you are not feeling mentally well, you won’t be able to help yourself or others. And more often than not, all this stress comes from our need to fill up every second of our day with errands and useless workload and to-do lists.
Stop procrastinating
This is a consequence of my first point. When you put everyone else first and you last, you start procrastinating on your own goals. Instead of giving yourself a 100% of your attention, you end up giving only 60% or less. So your work can’t be as good as it could have been. Whatever you set your mind to, just do it! And start today, not tomorrow, or next month!
Stop comparing your life to others
You will never be happy if you’re comparing yourself to others. The grass is always greener on the other side, but we never know what they are going through. Also, while we are at it, social media is so fake. Yet, it’s so easy to get distracted by it and believe every image we see. Simply put, you are walking on a path, and they are walking on a different one. One is definitely not better than the other, and don’t let anyone make you feel any differently!
I wrote last year an article about 3 habits that really changed my life. I give tips and tricks that might also help you if you are looking for a smaller change to apply to your life. You don’t necessarily want to change drastically otherwise, you could end up giving up completely!
Until next time,
Sofyah,
